The cryptocurrency was inspired by the popular doge meme that featured an image of a Shibu Inu dog. The satirical nature of dogecoin was initially meant to poke fun at Bitcoin but evolved to serve as a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency used for tipping on social media platforms.

Dogecoin was created in 2013 as a joke by software engineers Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer. Palmer tweeted the idea and Markus approached him to partner on making the concept a reality. 

The cryptocurrency was inspired by the popular doge meme that featured an image of a Shibu Inu dog. The satirical nature of dogecoin was initially meant to poke fun at Bitcoin but evolved to serve as a peer-to-peer cryptocurrency used for tipping on social media platforms. 

Dogecoin’s circulating supply currently exceeds 131 billion. The total supply is uncapped, meaning there is no limit to the amount that can be mined. 

In early 2021, Dogecoin won the adoration of influential figures including Tesla CEO Elon Musk, NBA team owner Mark Cuban, and Snoop Dogg. SpaceX completed a space mission funded by Dogecoin, and Cuban said the Dallas Mavericks would accept payment in DOGE.

Dogecoin's price has slipped below the moving average lines after encountering resistance at $0.105.
